This Cigarette

Sin is not a cigarette,
Sin is not a bottle of wine,

Sin is envy and pride and self-centredness
Sin is self-trust and self-pity, complete self-reliance
Sin is not being able to ask for help…

Convincing myself I need to be like somebody else
And simultaneously thinking that everyone else is not good enough,
Sin is not a herb…

Sin is thinking I can solve my own problems and getting frustrated when I realize I can’t
It isn’t a pornographic video or a one-night stand
It’s trying to fill in the gaps that were only meant to be filled by the Master,

The Creator who predestined in Himself, through Christ,

To be everything I would ever need.

So I am a sinner…
Clothed in pride, soaked in self-defense and dependency

Reeking of jealousy, every time a magazine shows me examples of someone else’s beauty
I am a sinner,
Because I tell myself your story the second you pass by,
The rule of first impressions my disguise,
The only impression God had regardless of the recklessness of my sin was that I would be

His bride.

His beautiful, spotless bride
And He would die for me.

So, I will gladly boast in my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.

The message behind this is that our focus concerning sin needs revisiting. Like the Father, we must be cognizant of the root cause of our ‘unlawful’ acts – the state our hearts. We are quick to judge each other based on our actions but our actions are deeply rooted in our thoughts… and God looks at our hearts. So, we shouldn’t be satisfied with the tick boxes we use to assess our goodness, let alone our righteousness for which we all don’t QUALIFY (#grace_&_righteousness_are_GIFTs).
